The 2010 prep softball season is headed down the stretch run with several teams still in consideration for the final top spot in the national rankings. With four ranking periods remaining, North Davidson (North Carolina) is again No. 1 in this week’s USA Today/NFCA High School Top 25, released Thursday by the Association.

North Davidson has opened Class 4A playoff action in the State of North Carolina with a pair of victories – 2-0 over Northwest Guilford and 2-1 over Southwest Guilford. The squad enters third-round play with a 28-0 mark.

In an unusual twist, the Top Three actually remain the same this week. No. 2 Valencia (California) continued its postseason quest this past week with a 2-0 win over Pacific. Florida Class 4A state champion Dunnellon remains third.

Thanks to an upset loss by Santiago (California), Frisco Wakeland (Texas) is back up a spot to fourth this week. Wakeland did lose a game but still won a three-game series to advance in regional play. Florida Class 4A state runner-up Naples is fifth again this week.

The USA Today/NFCA Top 25 is compiled by state representatives from across the country. Records for this week’s poll include all games played through May 23, 2010.
