State Championship weekend has arrived in the State of Florida. With this weekend’s semifinal round and final round, Naples High School will try to win a Class 4A state championship, while making its case to finish No. 1 in the USA Today/NFCA High School Top 25.
In this week’s rankings released Thursday by the NFCA, Naples remains the nation’s top-ranked team after breezing back by Lakewood Ranch to reach the state semifinals. On Friday, the 29-1 Golden Eagles will face No. 17 Bartram Trail in the first semifinal in Clermont. The other semifinal matches No. 6 Dunnellon and unranked Jensen Beach.
If the rankings hold, Naples and Dunnellon would meet in Saturday’s championship match. Naples is vying for its 11th state title, while 30-1 Dunnellon is attempting to defend last year’s crown.
Checking in at 27-3, Bartram Trail is actually the state’s defending Class 5A champion but moved down this season due to reclassification.
This week’s Top Five only reflects one slight change. Valencia (California) remains second; North Davison (North Carolina) remains third; Frisco Wakeland (Texas) remains fourth and returning to the Top Five is Alexander Central (North Carolina) at fifth.
The USA Today/NFCA Top 25 is compiled by state representatives from across the country. Records for this week’s poll include all games played through May 9, 2010.
