LOUISVILLE, Ky. – UT Tyler is back at No. 1 in this week’s NFCA/GoRout Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll. The co-Lone Star Conference champs regained the top spot which they held for the first eight polls of the season.
The Patriots (49-4) finished out the regular season with two LSC sweeps of then-No. 16 Oklahoma Christian and Cameron. They tied previous-No. 1 West Texas A&M for the conference title. The duo won the East and West Divisions, respectively with identical conference records, while also splitting the lone doubleheader of the season.
No. 2 Francis Marion, which received one first-place vote, had to battle back through the elimination bracket of the Conference Carolinas Tournament after dropping the opener to No. 8 seed North Greenville. The Patriots’ (47-4) 22-game win streak was snapped in the process. However, FMU was able to advance to the title game, which was contested on Monday, April 27.
The third-ranked Lady Buffs (50-4) split a pair of LSC twinbills with No. 7 Angelo State and Texas Woman’s to close out the season. WT will be the No. 1 see at the LSC Tournament after winning the tiebreaker with UT Tyler.
Central Oklahoma moved into the No. 4 spot, leapfrogging No. 5 Tampa. The Bronchos (43-8) closed out the regular season as the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association regular season champions and the tournament’s top seed. The Spartans (38-7) won its Sunshine State Conference series at Eckerd and hold a two-game lead over No. 14 Saint Leo and Barry. UT plays the latter in a crucial end-of-the-season series at home this weekend.
No. 6 Auburn Montgomery and No. 7 Angelo State stayed in their respective spots for the fourth consecutive week, while Augustana climbed its way back into the top-10 at No. 8. Western Washington moved up to No. 9 and North Georgia fell two spots to No. 10.
All but the seventh-ranked Rambelles (43-11), which finished second in the LSC West Division behind No. 3 West Texas A&M, won their respective regular-season league titles. Two programs extended their regular-season championship streaks as the 10th-ranked NightHawks (40-11) and eight-ranked Vikings (43-9) won their 11th and fifth straight league titles.
Two newcomers to the regular-season ranking this week are Bridgeport and Wingate, who tied for 25th. The Purple Knights (32-12) won their first regular season as a member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, while the Bulldogs (35-19) advanced to the South Atlantic Conference semifinals this week.
Other nationally-ranked programs that won their regular-season title are No. 13 Cal State East Bay, No. 15 Pace, No. 18 Tiffin and No. 21 Saginaw Valley State. It marked the first-ever regular-season title for 13th-ranked Pioneers (38-11) in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and the 18th-ranked Dragons (39-11) in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. The 15th-ranked Setters (37-9) captured their first-ever outright Northeast 10 Conference crown after an undefeated run through the league.
