LOUISVILLE, Ky. – UT Tyler suffered its first two defeats of the season, both one-run affairs to top-seven programs, but is still the unanimous No. 1 in this week’s NFCA/GoRout Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll.
The Patriots (19-2) split a pair of Lone Star Conference (LSC) doubleheaders against then-No. 5 Angelo State and then-No. 7 West Texas A&M. They concluded the week with a sweep of Midwestern State in LSC play.
Auburn-Montgomery and Tampa continued at No. 2 and No. 3, while Angelo State and West Texas A&M moved into the No. 4 and 5 spots. The Warhawks (15-3) went 5-0 sweeping a mid-week twinbill at Georgia Southwestern before taking all three in Gulf South Conference action at home versus Lee. The Spartans improved to 17-1 with four non-conference home wins against East Region opponents, then-No. 6 Wilmington (2-1, 5-0) and Assumption (6-0, 3-2).
Angelo State’s lone defeat was at the hands of the top-ranked Patriots in Tyler. After the doubleheader split, the Rambelles (19-3) swept Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas A&M International in league play.
The Lady Buffs (20-2) became the first Division II program to reach the 20-win mark after a 4-2 week in LSC action. Along with their split with UT Tyler, WT swept then-No. 20 Oklahoma Christian and split at home with Texas Woman’s.
Riding an 11-game win streak, Rogers State took hold of the sixth spot after a 4-0 showing at the Top Gun Invitational in Shawnee, Kan. Among those four wins was a 4-2 triumph over then-No. 5 Augustana. The Vikings (10-4) slipped to No. 7 after a 5-1 outing at the same tournament.
A red-hot Francis Marion (18-2), now ranked eighth, won four more games and is on a 14-game winning streak. No. 9 Western Washington (12-5) and No. 10 North Georgia (16-4) round out the top 10.
Continuing its rise up the poll is No. 15 Cal State East Bay, which elevated five spots for the second consecutive week. The Pioneers swept a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) series from then-No. 24 Cal State Dominguez Hills to improve to 16-1, the best start in program history.
New to the poll this week are No. 23 Lincoln Memorial and No. 24 San Francisco State. The Railsplitters improved to 16-5 following a 7-1 week, while the Gators (15-5) took three-out-of-four at then-No. 14 Cal State San Marcos in CCAA action.
