LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Riding a 15-game winning streak, University of Central Oklahoma made its return to the top 10 in this week’s 2024 NFCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll. North Georgia continued its firm hold on the top spot as the top five programs remained unchanged.
The NightHawks (28-3) did post a 5-1 mark last week. After completing a Peach Belt sweep of Augusta on March 11, UNG had its 16-game win streak snapped as it split a hard-fought doubleheader at then-No. 17 Auburn Montgomery before completing the week with a three-game league sweep of Georgia Southwestern.
No. 2 West Texas A&M also went 5-1, all in Lone Star Conference (LSC) action, sweeping Eastern New Mexico and taking two-of-three from Texas A&M-Kingsville.
No. 3 Rogers State, No. 4 Tampa, No. 5 UT Tyler and new-No. 6 Indianapolis went a combined 25-0 and all own double-digit win streaks heading into this week’s action. The Hillcats (22-4) went on the road and swept a pair of MIAA twinbills from new-No. 23 Washburn and Emporia State. The Spartans (23-4) recorded three shutouts and surrendered just three runs in five victories, while the Patriots (25-5) captured six more LSC victories, sweeping Texas Woman’s at home and Oklahoma Christian on the road.
The sixth-ranked Greyhounds (25-2) moved past idle Grand Valley State with 10 wins and extended their streak to 16 games. With six more wins in Florida, UIndy wrapped up a perfect 8-0 showing at The Spring Games before opening Great Lakes Valley Conference play with doubleheader road wins at Southwest Baptist and Drury.
Colorado Christian moved into the eighth spot (2-0 at UCCS) with another red-hot MIAA team, Central Oklahoma, in ninth. The Bronchos (22-6), after starting 1-4, have won 21 of their last 23 contests after winning six more times last week. Mississippi College dipped to 10th to round out the top 10 teams.
The third MIAA team in the poll is No. 11 Pittsburg State, climbing two more spots this week. The Gorillas (30-2) are the first NCAA softball program to reach 30 wins in 2024 and own the longest win streak in Division II at 20 games. Pitt State and Rogers State match up this Saturday in a league twinbill at Diamond Sports Complex in Claremore, Okla.
No. 23 Washburn and No. 25 Nova Southeastern make returns to the rankings, while West Alabama and Southern Arkansas drop out.
