LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Melissa resumed its winning ways, rebounding from a 2-0 loss on May 14 to Lake Belton to sweep the Broncos in the final two games of their best-of-three playoff series this past week by a combined 19-2 score and remain No. 1 in the NFCA Spring High School Top 25 Coaches Poll for a 11th straight ranking.

The (37-1) Cardinals also defeated Aledo, 15-4 on Wednesday, to advance to next Friday’s Texas Class 5A, Division 1 state title game against Barbers Hill or Smithson Valley.

Summerville stayed undefeated by finishing a sweep of Sumter in its best-of-three state semifinal series on Wednesday. The (32-0) Green Wave are still solidly positioned in the No. 3 spot in the poll while they await their opponent for the South Carolina 5A, Division 1 championship game.

The rest of the teams in the top 10 stayed put as well, including No. 9 Owyhee (28-1) which wrapped up its season with a 3-2 victory over Mountain View in Saturday’s Idaho 6A state championship.

Meanwhile, Rhode Island’s La Salle Academy (21-1) slipped some after a 7-4 loss to unbeaten Massachusetts powerhouse Taunton last Thursday, as did Marist (29-2), which fell 5-3 to Lake Central on Monday to mess up its unbeaten week.

In Washington, Mt. Spokane (23-0) and Skyview (20-1) both gained one place heading into this week’s state tournament, while Orange Beach (47-2) surged two spots after capturing the Alabama 4A state crown.

No. 20 Benton plays in the Arkansas state 5A final later today against Sheridan.

State rankings submitted by the NFCA High School Steering Committee are used to compile the NFCA Spring High School Top 25 Coaches Poll. Teams are chosen based on performance, roster quality and strength of schedule.
