LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Melissa suffered its first loss of the season, but remained atop the NFCA Spring High School Top 25 Coaches Poll for a 10th consecutive week.

The (34-1) Cardinals won their first two contests — a playoff sweep of Midlothian — before dropping the first game of a best-of-three Class 5A, Division 1 regional final with Lake Benton, 2-0 on Wednesday. The teams play again Friday, with Melissa hoping to force a winner-take-all third game on Saturday.

Following five-time reigning Louisiana state titlist Calvary Baptist at No. 2, two-time South Carolina state champ Summerville stayed put at No. 3 with three more victories. The unbeaten Green Wave head into next week’s lower state championship series against Sumter riding a 30-game win streak this season.

Lake Creek (32-0) and Bishop O’Connell (18-0) stayed perfect to leapfrog Katy (36-2) which lost 7-5 to Clear Springs in the first game of its Class 6A, Division 1 regional semifinal.

After Katy at No. 6, Lincoln-Way Central (25-1), Doral Academy (28-1) and Owyhee (24-1) all moved up one place. Donovan Catholic (20-1) slid three spots after being edged 9-7 Monday by a Marlboro team it had blanked 6-0 just five days prior, but remained in the top 10.

The lone newcomer this week is Perrysburg (17-1) at No. 15, which replaces fellow Ohio school Austintown-Fitch, who was tied for 25th last week but dropped out of the rankings after a loss.

Beecher (29-2) slipped one place to 17th after Tuesday’s 10-0 loss to then-No. 8 Lincoln-Way Central.

State rankings submitted by the NFCA High School Steering Committee are used to compile the NFCA Spring High School Top 25 Coaches Poll. Teams are chosen based on performance, roster quality and strength of schedule.
