LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Melissa won its best-of-three Texas UIL Class 5A bi-district playoff series to remain undefeated and continue as the top team in the NFCA Spring High School Top 25 Coaches Poll for an eighth consecutive week.

The (31-0) Cardinals swept Texas High and face Wakeland in the next round on Friday. Melissa has jumped out on opponents fast in games this season, averaging four runs in the first inning alone. Overall, the Cardinals are scoring 13.1 runs per game.

Meanwhile, Calvary Baptist (35-1) routed Bunkie, 15-0 last Friday, to advance to this Friday’s Louisiana Division III Select state semifinals. The Cavaliers will face Parkview Baptist with a berth in the following day’s championship game on the line.

No. 3 Summerville (25-0) stayed perfect with 4-0 week during which it yielded just two runs while scoring 46. Both those runs were allowed in the Green Wave’s 6-2 Wednesday win over West Ashley.

The next six spots also remained unchanged, before Lincoln-Way Central (17-1) replaced Beecher (22-1) in the 10th position following a 6-0 ranked victory over then-No. 13 Lincoln-Way East, who blanked Beecher 6-0 on Monday.

Unbeaten La Salle Academy (13-0) surged six places to No. 12 following last Friday’s 1-0 triumph over then-No. 16 St. Anthony’s, while No. 13 Marist (20-1) also surged six spots after extending its win streak to 12 since suffering a 3-2 loss to Lincoln-Way Central back on March 14.

Mt. Spokane (18-0) is the lone newcomer to the rankings, slotting in at No. 14, just ahead of fellow Washington state school Skyview (14-1), which maintained its No. 15 position from last week.

Elsewhere, No. 17 Orange Beach (40-2) added to its poll-leading win total, reaching 40 victories for the season with a playoff sweep of Satsuma.

State rankings submitted by the NFCA High School Steering Committee are used to compile the NFCA Spring High School Top 25 Coaches Poll. Teams are chosen based on performance, roster quality and strength of schedule.
