LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Melissa won twice again this past week to stay perfect and keep setting the pace atop the NFCA Spring High School Top 25 Coaches Poll.

The (25-0) Cardinals blasted Anna, 22-0 on Friday, and Denison, 15-0 on Tuesday, to remain No. 1 for a fifth straight week. Melissa has now outscored its opponents 333-21 this season, and 70-0 over its last four games, with Lovejoy next on the schedule on Friday.

Calvary Baptist (32-1) suffered its first loss of the season, 2-1 to Sterlington on Monday, but won its other four games to stay put in the No. 2 spot. St. Anthony’s was not so lucky after losing 10-0 to Donovan Catholic on Sunday, which dropped the (5-1) Friars all the way from third to 18th this week.

That was the start of a major shift in the rankings, where unbeaten Summerville (17-0) went from fifth to No. 3, Katy (28-1) moved from eighth to fourth, and No. 5 Norco (18-2) and No. 6 Lake Creek (25-0) were the only other two top 10 teams that remained in that group this week.

Bishop O’Connell (9-0), Owyhee (14-0), Diamond (13-0) and Marist (6-0) all kept winning and round out the revised top 10. Previously unranked schools Donovan Catholic (5-0), Anthony Wayne (4-0) and Orange Beach (24-1) occupy the next three slots.

Doral Academy (20-1), which lost 7-2 to the No. 13 Makos on Saturday, dropped from ninth to 14th. Rosary Academy (17-2-1) makes its poll debut after a 1-0 victory over Orange Lutheran in the semifinals of the prestigious Michelle Carew Classic over the weekend.

Orange Lutheran had beaten then-No. 4 Norco prior to its loss, so the Lancers only dropped to 16th, followed by this week’s final newcomer, Floyd Central (9-1) at No. 17. The bottom of the top 25 was the most stable group, with Nos. 20-24 staying unchanged ahead of a tie between Northwest Rankin (21-2) and Monteverde Academy (18-2) for the final ranking spot.

State rankings submitted by the NFCA High School Steering Committee are used to compile the NFCA Spring High School Top 25 Coaches Poll. Teams are chosen based on performance, roster quality and strength of schedule.
