LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Reigning Mississippi state champ Northwest Rankin opened the season exactly where it finished last year, as the No. 1 team in the NFCA Spring High School Top 25 Coaches Poll.
The (7-0) Cougars are one of seven ranked teams off to a perfect start in 2025, and will be seeking their 50th consecutive victory when they play fellow unbeaten George County (8-0) on Friday.
Northwest Rankin has outscored its opponents 60-3 this season and hasn’t lost a game since falling 4-2 to Gulfport on April 29, 2023, in the middle game of a best-of-three playoff series the Cougars ultimately captured. They were 34-0 last year.
No. 2 Melissa (15-0), No. 3 Calvary Baptist (10-0) and fourth-ranked Norco (7-0) have all also rolled out of the gate, while No. 8 Summerville (5-0), No. 10 Coahoma (11-0) and 11th-ranked Spanish Fort (12-0) have followed suit.
No. 9 Katy (19-1), which spent eight weeks in the top spot last season, has only lost to fellow Texas power Barbers Hill, 2-0 on March 1, so far this year. The 17 remaining ranked squads have yet to play their first game.
State rankings submitted by the 2025 NFCA High School Steering Committee are used to compile the NFCA Spring High School Top 25 Coaches Poll. Teams are chosen based on performance, roster quality and strength of schedule.
